BISAYA-BORN Linda Suzi Raniah converted to Islam yesterday in a conversion ceremony that took place at the residence of Hj Minor Absah Abdullah at Kampung Lambak Kiri, Berakas.

The new convert, now known as Nurema Syahlinda Abdullah Raniah, said that she had intended to convert for many years now but did not have the opportunity nor the means to do so.

"I have always planned to convert ever since I was a kid, even since primary school I wanted to know more about the religion," the 19-year-old told The Brunei Times.

In attendance as to witness to the ceremony was YB Datin Paduka Ustazah Hjh Zasia Sirin, the head of Policy, Planning and Research at the Ministry of Religious Affairs and State Legislative Council member.

The new convert added that it was quite a "happy" day for her because she felt that it was the right decision to embrace Islam especially as the date of her conversion was also the birthday anniversary of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) for 1433 Hijrah.

Nurema took an oath declaring her faith in the oneness of Allah (SWT) and the seal of the Prophethood of Muhammad (PBUH) and recited the Syahadah (declaration of faith) in the presence of religious officers from the Islamic Da'wah Centre (PDI) of Ministry of Religious Affairs (MoRA).

After the ceremony, a Dikir Marhaban was performed to welcome and bless the new convert who was then sprinkled with bunga rampai (scented shredded flowers) by the guests.
