Standard Chartered Bank (SCB) presented over $80,000 worth of funds raised from its Charity Run in the form of a cheque to three local charities yesterday at the Mutiara Ballroom, Radisson Hotel.

A total of $80, 272.68 was raised during the SCB Charity Run that took place on August 8, which attracted 1,300 participants throughout the Sultanate, including five visually impaired and 26 special needs individuals with the addition of 33 teams who ran blindfolded.

The three charities that received the donations yesterday was SCB's 'Seeing is Believing' Programme, Pusat Ehsan Al-Hajjah Al-Maryam and Persatuan Kanak-Kanak Cacat.

All proceeds raised from the Charity Run were evenly distributed among the three charities.

SCB Chief Executive Officer Danny Quah said that although Brunei does not share similar skills in hosting marathons such as in Singapore and Malaysia, they used the recent charity run to inspire a healthy and balanced lifestyle and being able to give back to the community.

"The result (of the charity run) was overwhelming. We had great response from the public who wanted to participate, we had great support from the sponsors and partners and generosity for those who donated towards this fundraiser was remarkable," he said.

Present as the guest of honour yesterday was Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Laila Diraja Dato Paduka Hj Hazair Hj Abdullah, who was accompanied by Deputy Minister Datin Hjh Adina Othman and senior officials from the ministry.

The SCB Charity Run was the first of its kind to have taken place in Brunei. Participants had the choice of competing in the 10.5km challenge run or the 2.5km fun run with the additional option of running with a partner blindfolded.

The 10.5km run started from the Jerudong Park Amphitheatre and stretched all the way to the roundabouts of The Empire Hotel and Country Club before making a return trip. The 2.5km run began at the Jerudong Park Amphitheatre, but only reached the end of the Jerudong Park premises before heading back.
