WHILE the results of the second Bandar Seri Begawan Development Masterplan survey (published on The Brunei Times on August 19, 2010) have generally shown a positive outlook to go "green" among youths, it remains to be seen whether majority of the population are keen to do their part in protecting the environment.
It was reported that six in every 10 or 64 per cent of the more than 450 respondents support the implementation of city-wide recycling programme. This means that a considerable number of respondents were reluctant or still not open to this idea. What are the reasons for this?
It should also be noted that this is only a city-wide recycling programme, and not even nationwide. Some of them are already opposing a small-scale recycling programme in BSB compared to the whole of Brunei, how is the government going to get public support if it decides to implement this programme?
Brunei is already slow in enforcing recycling policies compared to other countries, recycling bins are hardly visible in BSB, especially in government offices.
If we are really serious about safeguarding the environment, there should be more awareness on recycling and both the public and private sector should provide the means to make it easier for everyone to recycle.
