I would like to put forward my comments on your article "Parents" negligence blamed for sexual abuse among children" which came out yesterday.
I am extremely distressed to see such things being written in a newspaper of this high caliber.
As a victim of sexual abuse, I can tell you that my parents had absolutely nothing to do with what happened to me.
Nobody but the person who abused me was to blame for what happened. How was anybody to know that a member of our family would be the perpetrator of such a thing?
And frankly perpetrators of sexual abuse tend to be people the victim knows and trusts.
I understand that you are merely printing the opinion of the police officer in the article but making these flagrant remarks is irresponsible.
Parents and victims who underwent the same trauma I did, will start blaming themselves- for something that isn't their fault- after reading this article.
Yes, parents should keep a close eye on their children, especially with regards to the company they keep and their activity on the internet. But at the end of the day these are only the measures parents can take other than educating their children, and the unfortunate incidents may still happen. Please apportion blame to the person who committed the crime, not the victims.
